Employee Engagement – How to Move the Needle
Gallup, the worldwide leader in data analytics for tracking employee attitudes and behaviors, recently released their most recent “State of the Global Workplace” report. Gallup defines engaged employees as those who are involved in, enthusiastic about, and committed to their work and the workplace.
In 2017, Gallup reported that 31% of US employees felt engaged in their jobs. Worldwide, only 15% of employees felt engaged. In the past 15 years of tracking engagement, Gallup reports there has been little to no change in US engagement numbers, which could lead one to wonder – why aren’t employees becoming more engaged in what they do and where they do it? And equally important, why does engagement even matter?
Employee Engagement does matter, and here’s why~
Engaged employees are more committed
Highly engaged employees realize a 17% increase in productivity, report a 41% reduction in absenteeism, and report a 24% lower turnover
Engaged employees care more
Highly engaged employees experience 28% less shrinkage and 40% fewer quality issues
Engaged employees are safer
Highly engaged employees report 70% fewer accidents
Engaged employees deliver results
- Highly engaged employees result in 21% greater profitability
- Highly engage employees achieve a 10% increase in customer ratings
- Highly engage employees realize a 20% increase in sales and 21% greater profitability
Based on these statistics, Gallup reports that the 85% of disengaged employees worldwide cost organizations between $450 and $550 billion annually. Just think how much more profitable a company could be if one could just move the needle on engagement and retain, rather than lose, its best employees.
5 Strategies to Engage Your Best Employees
How can you create a workplace where people love their jobs, are willing to go above and beyond, and are committed and want to stay? Create an environment that is envied. Here are 5 strategies to help engage your best employees:
1. THE RIGHT FIT
Hire the right person for the right job. Provide the right tools for success. Allow the time to do the job right – to think, act, spend time with customers. Employees who are able to contribute in a purposeful and meaningful way are more engaged.
2. LINK EMPLOYEE GOALS TO THE ORGANIZATION’S GOALS
Engaged employees want very clear role expectations, performance measurements, and understand what success looks like. Engaged employees are open to being coached and mentored in a positive way, and are eager to build on their strengths. They also want to know that their contributions make an impact and positively affect the overall goals of the organization.
3. “HUMAN” CAPITAL ENVIRONMENT
Engaged employees want a respectful, supportive, and inclusive workplace. Respect their well-being, support them with recognition, treat everyone fairly, and ensure they have a voice. All create a sense of belonging and help foster a positive work environment.
4. GROW AND DEVELOP
Top performers want to stay top performing. Build opportunity for both professional development and professional growth. Organizations who promote a learning-based culture have higher retention. Top employees stay where know they are able to grow, develop, and advance. Hire and develop great leaders that want to develop and coach great employees. Everyone wins.
5. LEAD WITH A PURPOSE
Companies that are truly mission-driven have a soul. They are guided by a set of company values that are the heartbeat to all stakeholders: internally and externally. The best leaders are authentic and transparent in both word and action. They engage, inquire, collaborate and inspire. They seek feedback, they make changes, they invest in what’s important – their people.
